Testimonials

Chisolm did a great job repairing the claw feet on a 1820s table I found. The guy has a rare amazing talent. I couldn’t even tell where the repairs were made. Would highly recommend for furniture repairs !

Great experience with Chisholm having a chair repaired recently. He did exactly what he said he was going to do , and we were very pleased with the results. Refreshing to find someone like this these days. Highly recommend.

BIO:

For me, it started with my great grandfather (William Bachman Chisolm) who was a cabinet maker in the late 1800's in Charleston, SC. My parent's have approximately 11 incredibly beautiful, sometimes inlayed, pieces he made and kept for himself.  They have his personal dining room table, a buffet, a sideboard, a 6 ft. model sailboat he built from scratch (newspaper articles show that he sailed it on Colonial Lake in Charleston) and 4 Sheraton Style chairs. The chairs, like all of his work are beyond beautiful and equally inspiring. Each chair has rice stalks delicately carved in each back splat and the last is blank -as he passed before finishing it. He died at 55 from a simple cut or infection -before penicillin.

I grew up around his pieces in awe, especially the sailboat. After studying history at  Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, I moved to Telluride, Co and started as a laborer with a log home crew (Golden Bear Builders). I stuck with it and eventually became a lead carpenter after 6 years of hard, fun work. I moved backed to Charleston to study furniture and fine antique restoration and was very fortunate to have apprenticed under David Beckford, who was probably the leading restoration specialist in the Southeast at the time. Together, we restored pieces for the Heyward Washington House, the Charleston Museum, the River's Collection and a host of others. We were able to visit the finest homes in Charleston and work on some of the oldest, finest antiques I've yet to see anywhere...

32 years later. I'm still doing what I love and enjoy working with wood more than ever. This year, I was a recipient (along with Silver River Chairs of Asheville, NC) of the Folklife Apprenticeship Grant/Award for 2020. So excited to continue learning from the best and very appreciative to the NC Arts Council and the NC Folklife Institute for this exciting opportunity.

We can certainly handle your furniture needs with care and you will love the results! We try and repair each piece, precisely as it was made -using old wood, old hand tools and usually traditional finishes, applied by hand.

Any customer input or ideas are welcome and always valued. Hope to hear from you soon!
